The Curious Case of a Michigan Haunting…

    2008 - 11.23

I was recently referred by a friend to a woman living in rural Michigan with strange tales about her haunted home. For the past two years, she and her daughter have experienced countess unexplainable phenomena in the 130-year-old house. While she has been too terrified to attempt any audio recordings, she has taken hundreds of photographs hoping to gather some evidence to support her claims.

As is often the case, many of the images relayed to me by the owner are too difficult to judge as “paranormal” in nature. She does not use a flash, afraid that it could adversely effect any ghostly phenomena, therefore many of the images are darkened beyond recognition. Yet one stands out above the rest. After her dog began reacting to some unseen presence, she snapped a photograph in her living room in the direction of her dog’s agitation.

What appeared on the left side of the image was the figure you see here* to the left of the text. No one else was in the home at the time. It might appear menacing to some, though I feel it could easily be a teenage boy dressed in Goth clothing.

As I help her find a local investigation team to explore her case, I can’t help but wonder about the effects of camera flash in investigation techniques. Perhaps she’s on to something. Would the same results have occurred with a flash? Everyone has their own unique methods of capturing evidence. It might be something interesting to try in the future… even though I loathe the digital camera and its use in investigations.

So, just what else have we been missing while blinding each other with brilliant halogen flashes? Instead of highlighting dust “orbs” and mosquito “faeries”, could we be missing the good stuff?

*The image was brightened for this post for clarification.

    But Does She Float?

It is said that you cannot teach an old dog new tricks. This point may have been proved true recently in an adult education class in Ferndale, Michigan.

Students in a classroom at Taft Education Center were studying The Crucible, a play pertaining to the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. On September 10th, 20-year-old Darin Najor asked the educator outright if she believed in witchcraft. She replied in the negative and further explained that the point of the play was to demonstrate unjust persecution. Najor then tossed his studies to the floor, declaring it “blasphemy”.

The following day, he stepped up behind the teacher who was sitting at her desk. While chanting what reportedly sounded like “religious verses”, he poured a liquid (later said to be holy water—Najor’s attempt at “purifying” the professor) over the head of his teacher and produced a cigarette lighter to “burn the witch”. Najor fled the class but was soon found by the teacher and a security guard in his car in the parking lot where he further attempted to burn her with a lit cigarette.

Darin was arrested Monday on an assault and battery warrant. The pretrial is scheduled for October 23rd. Fittingly, Najor does not have an attorney for the case.

After over 300 years, some people just can’t quite grasp the lessons of history. Or perhaps he isn’t as dim-witted as we percieve and merely attempted to reenact the proceedings of the times.

This isn’t the sort of “live history” anyone had in mind.

At least he didn’t drop a house on her.

    A Knight’s Ethereal Tale…

During an average consultation in Dearborn, Michigan, psychic Lori Miller had an unexpected guest: Heath Ledger.

It happened last week during a session consulting a deceased relative of no relation to the actor. Ledger appeared very youthful and dressed in casual attire. He was adamant that a few messages get through.

According to 27-year-old Miller, he looked her right in the eyes and said, “Life’s too fucking short. you got to enjoy your life.”

Ledger’s spirit went on to lament on not having the chance to spend time with his daughter, Matilda, and praise the success of The Dark Night. He was pleased that his co-workers were receiving acclaim and was aware of the recent unfortunate events of fellow cast members. He also stated that he was acting as a “guardian angel” for them and doing what he could to see them through the difficult times.

“Sometimes when I’m having a session and engaged with an entity, another one will appear for no reason,” she said. “That’s what happened this time.”

Jeepers Creepers, Where’d You Get Those Peepers?

    2008 - 03.25

Over the past decade or more, stories of particularly strange encounters with not-quite-human people have been whispered around the globe.

The storytellers are very diverse: a bank executive in Sydney, Australia elevator; a couple at a rest area in Michigan; a Portland, Oregon apartment manager; an anonymous Starbucks customer in an undisclosed location; and most-surprisingly a newspaper reporter in Abilene, Texas.

To the casual observer, the individuals they met or saw wouldn’t seem very unusual. Though upon closer inspection, they all had one very odd thing in common: their eyes. They were pure blackness, lacking a pupil or iris.

Websites often refer to these people as BEKs (short for “black eyed kids“). Generally, they are children, between 10 and 18, and are entreating entrance. Be it a ride in a car or coming inside a home or apartment to borrow the phone, they generally grow impatient if denied. Witnesses have noticed a strange, uncomfortable feeling around them… even compulsion, as if under hypnosis.

But who are they? Several theories exist, from the mundane “people wearing black contact lenses” to the obscure, more paranormal “alien hybrids”, “demons”, and “vampires”. The fact that they cannot enter a vehicle or dwelling without the owner’s permission lends credence to the similarities with vampire legends. Whatever they are, the people who have reported the encounters have been terrified and shaken by their experiences.

Are they real? Many people say that it’s simply an urban legend. Indeed, there is no evidence backing up these stories, which makes them difficult to prove. They were all chance encounters, usually without other people present. No photographs were taken. No traces were left behind.

The most credible encounter was that of Brian Bethel, a newspaper reporter who encountered two strange children outside a movie theater in Texas. his 1998 tale has been the cause of much speculation… and even controversy. Some allege that the tale is fiction, while Bethel still stands by his story. And yes, he’s even on Blogger.

The only real way to know for sure is to experience one first-hand. After all, seeing is believing…
