    News from our Strange World…

    2008 - 12.04

It’s an odd word out there. We’re in the middle of some scary times… and I’m not even talking about the economy! If those dire tales of woe from your local broadcasters are turning you numb, here are just a few of the more amusing news stories you missed.

    Needling those Politicians…

Sorry, President Sarkozy. A French court has decided against banning voodoo dolls made in his image. The novelty toys may have won, but they didn’t walk away unscathed. K&B was ordered to pay one Euro in damages plus court costs and now needs to attach a disclaimer to the doll stating that the President of France disapproves. I’m sure Sarkozy is feeling a but more blue than his fabric likeness.

    Girl Power(s)…

Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell has decided to ’spice up her life’. The actress and singer recently discovered her own psychic abilities! As proof of her supernatural skills, she accurately predicted that one of her PAs would give birth to a girl. Good going, Ginger. It’s the little victories that matter most, right?

    ¡Salsa Dios Mío!

The Virgin Mary decided to get a little favor when she miraculouly appeared in salsa splatter on a wall in Bakersfield. While mincing the Spanish treat in a blender, the California woman noticed the pattern on her kitchen cabinet after some dip splashed out of its container. The anonymous homeowner says there is also the scent of roses in her flowerless home. She told local media sources that she beieves it to be a sign that “people need to start treating each other better”. She could start by passing the nachos…

    Drive-In Ghost Tours…

Don’t believe what you hear; ghost hunting can be deadly! Participants in a Charleston ghost tour discovered this for themselves Tuesday night when an out-of-control Mazda RX7 crashed through the crowd at Meeting and Broad streets, known as the Four Corners of Law. The driver accidentally stepped on the gas instead of the clutch, injuring two tourists. Tour owner John LaVerne refunded everyone, though most continued the tour. Talk about your die-hard ghost hunters!

I Fell into a Burning Ring of Fire…

What do you do when your apartment is infiltrated by evil? Well, a woman in Marietta, Georgia thought she chose the best solution: burn it down. Claiming that items inside her dwelling were possessed by voodoo curses, Felicia Johnson stacked the belongings in two piles and lit them ablaze to “cleanse the apartment of the spirits”. Marietta Fire Department quickly conquered the flames and avoided serious damage to the complex. She was charged with first degree arson and taken to a hospital to undergo mental evaluation.

    Some Graveyard Politics…

    2008 - 04.30

You don’t necessarily need to have a pulse to help out a political campaign. Roy Scheider proved that last week when the Obama campaign reported a $50 donation on March 10th, one month after Scheider died.

Some of you may remember the actor as ‘Martin Brody’ from the movie Jaws. His famous line, “You’re gonna need a bigger boat,” wasn’t in the script: he improvised it at the last minute. He passed away on February 10th from what is believed to be complications from a staph infection.

Campaign officials said the money came from an automatic credit card monthly donation program and the funds would instead be donated to another charity.

As far as Scheider’s continued support of Obama, we’ll never know for sure. He’s not telling anyone…

    Reading Between the Party Lines…

    2008 - 04.08

Yes, many of us are already tired of the Presidential race. I’ll spare you all another political rant, but I wanted to share a little tidbit of news…

This week, Hillary Clinton spoke with the Philadelphia Gay News. Of the three candidates, she was the only one who chose to permit an interview. In the last four years, Obama has granted zero interviews with local GLBT press. And only one interview with mainstream gay press during the entire campaign. McCain’s campaign has even acted more politely to local GLBT media sources than Obama’s campaign.

Perhaps he’s playing it safe… or perhaps all the people I’ve heard praising Obama’s support of the community might be a little misguided.

That is all. I’ll get off my soap box. Or quit playing devil’s advocate… whichever you prefer.

    The Undead Political Graveyard…

    2008 - 03.05

Well, I’m keeping tabs on the primary elections tonight, just to see what is happening. Hillary already won Ohio… and it’s looking like Texas too (as of a few minutes ago). If she does indeed win both, that means she’s not out of the running yet. And I’ll be glad.

Yes, I voted. Since I was an emergency poll worker, I was on call. Thankfully, with all the problems they were running into today, they didn’t call me in. Though, of course, the money would have been very nice.

This is turning into quite an interesting election. Most Americans would be happy with either candidate, but I’ll confess I voted for Hillary Clinton. Why? Well, for one it’s a major chance to have a woman in office. I also liked her while she was First Lady, and she did reach out to people even back then. She seems to have an insider’s perspective of how Washington and the presidency works so at the very least, she can tell what changes can be made and how. She has been attacked for getting defensive and attacking Obama, but if she were a man would we be taking that more lightly?

That’s the tricky part of this campaign. Who you vote for will be scrutinized. If you vote Hillary, you might be a racist. If you vote Obama, you might be sexist. If you don’t vote… well, then you’re safe except for being an idiot for not voting in the first place.

    Seriously. There’s no excuse.

It seems like the younger crowd likes Obama. Also, judging by the exit polls, votes are also strongly divided along racial lines. Well, not so much on Hillary’s side… that’s all rather even. It makes us wonder: are we voting for one candidate because of who they are outside instead of inside? If both were white males, would the voting be different right now?

Sadly, it’s the way people think. It’s not about what’s inside… the platform… past experience. It’s white woman versus black man. Simply put. And that’s how many people view it. Not all, but many.

Do I like Obama? Well, yes… but I disagree with him on some of his ideas. Health care… honestly, just making it “more affordable” and not universal? We’re still the one “powerful” country that doesn’t have universal health care. Shouldn’t we try to be even with the rest of the world? And how exactly does he plan to make all these things happen? (Not to sound like Hillary) But I would like to see definitive plans, not just a pipe dream. And yes, Hillary does spell things out quite clearly on her website… she actually covers the “how” portion.

So, the lines are drawn but fading between the two. The race is neck-and-neck. Obama was gloating the other day over his latest victories…. now the two big states are letting him know that arrogance isn’t pretty.

it’s not over yet… and neither are the heated discussions between the candidates and the American people…
